Podiatrist Takes Big Steps
by Laurie Gordon

Marc R. Frankel, DPM, runs Sussex Foot and Ankle Specialists by this motto: "I always make my patient the priority."

With this philosophy and his attention to detail in all that he does to care for his patients, it's no wonder that he's quickly become one of the most popular podiatrists in the area, even though his practice in the area is brand new.

Frankel opened his Sparta practice in April.  In May, he opened a second office in Milford, PA. "It was quite a spring," he says.  At the same time, he and his wife, Susan, an attorney who practices in New York City, moved to Stockholm.

Frankel says, "As the support for your entire body, your feet are the foundation for your body's health.  That's why we place such an emphasis on maintaining healthy feet.  At Sussex Foot and Ankle Specialists, we are devoted to complete lower extremity care."

Frankel emphasizes that he "created this practice in order to provide you with the finest foot services in the area.  We stay on the cutting edge of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures so that we may offer all possible treatment options to the entire community - even those that are not commonly available.

"We are dedicated to your health," he adds, "so we provide complete musculoskeletal foot and ankle solutions for any painful disorder that may arise."

Frankel grew up on Long Island and attended undergraduate college at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  He attended the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, receiving his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1996.  He served externships at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in San Diego, Calif., the United States Naval Hospital/Branch Medical Clinic in Paris Island, S.C., and at St. Agnes Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Frankel received his residency training at Franciscan Health System of New Jersey.  There he was involved in the Podiatric Residency Program and was chief resident.  Frankel also served a three-year residency in podiatric and clinical medicine and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle with Franciscan Health System.

Frankel is board certified in foot surgery.  He is affiliated with Newton Memorial Hospital and Saint Clare's Hospital.  He is also a former Mount Sinai School of Medicine clinical instructor.

Sussex County Foot and Ankle Specialists offers many services.  There are convenient morning and late evening office hours and you can make appointments either by phone or via e-mail.  The practice offers same-day appointments for urgent care and accepts most insurance plans.  A physician is available 24/7 for emergencies and the practice prides itself on a "friendly, knowledgeable staff that's ready to assist you."

Sussex Foot and Ankle Specialists provides state-of-the-art care for all foot and ankle disorders including: ingrown toenails, warts, non-healing diabetic wounds, bunions and hammertoes, flatfoot, heal and arch pain, running and sports-related injuries, arthritis, foot and ankle fractures and tendon injuries.  Frankel sees patients of all ages and walks of life from kids with warts to athletes, adults and seniors with any kind of foot ailment.

A specialty of the practice is custom-made orthotics.  These are medical devices (shoe inserts) which are tailored to the needs of each individual patient.  Orthotics are designed to allow the feel to function without pain and protect them from the repetitive stress placed on the feet during sports activity or just normal walking.  Many painful foot conditions can be attributed to irregular walking patterns and abnormal foot function, which orthotics can effectively correct, without the need for surgery.

"Many of our orthotic patients come to our facility having suffered through years of foot pain and discomfort before finally achieving relief," Frankel says.  "Our younger orthotic patients typically have ailments such as sports-induced heal pain and arch fatigue, achilles tendonitis, flat feet, and gait or running abnormalities.  Our older patients typically have problematic foot conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and thinning of their protective fat pad located on the heal and ball of the foot."

"The orthotic program created by Sussex Foot and Ankle Specialists was successfully developed to provide our patients with an enhanced level of care that eliminates foot pain and their associated causes by effectively controlling the complex interaction between the foot, ankle and leg," Frankel says.

Outstanding medical and surgical services is the founding principle at Sussex Foot and Ankle Specialists.  Frankel says, "We are committed to providing you with the very best medicine has to offer."  Frankel is steadfast in keeping up-to-date with the latest advances in podiatric orthopedics so that he can offer them to patients.  For example, he says, "I have special training in both laser techniques and minimally invasive arthroscopy."  The latter is a diagnostic procedure utilizing a miniature camera to look inside the foot.
